ELAWC’s response to the AIDS epidemic began in 1986 with the implementation of the Southern California Bilingual HIV/AIDS hotline - 800-400-SIDA - one of the first bilingual hotlines. For more than two decades, thousands of people in Los Angeles County have contacted the hotline for education, testing and treatment referrals, and support. ELAWC is actively involved in the national HIV/AIDS arena through participation and membership in the National Minority AIDS Council and the ALIANZA Latino Caucus on HIV/AIDS.
Implemented in 1997, the Promotoras en Accion Contra el SIDA addresses unique, multi-faceted issues facing underserved Latina women at risk for HIV/AIDs, STIs, and domestic violence. Promotoras are drawn from the community and trained to educate and support other women with a culturally relevant approach to prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s), domestic violence, sexual assault. In addition, promotoras are trained to help increase self esteem, improve personal decision making, and access needed medical services.
